A quick jaunt from the city of Rome is the town of Tivoli, built on the slopes of the Sabine Hills. Hadrian's Villa was built by Emperor Hadrian in the second century A.D. as a country residence. It features the imperial palace, baths, libraries, and gardens full of sculptures and pools. Nearby is the Villa d'Este, built during the late Renaissance by Lucretia Borgia's son, famous for its gardens, marvelous fountains, waterfalls, and ancient trees.
