The first settlement of Ostia Antica can be traced back to the beginning of the 4th century B.C., immediately after the defeat of the Etruscan town of Veio, situated on the right bank of the Tiber river , which fell to the Roman army in 396 B.C. Only at the end of that century a squared fortified post (castrum) was built. For a long time Ostai was Rome's only river port, together with Pozzuoli, even it its access was difficult because of the banks formed at mouuh by the detritus from the Tiber. For this reason, the large freight ships that arrived here had to unload their cargo onto smaller boats that wereable to go up the river to Rome.
Your visit to Ostia Antica itself starts at "Via delle Tombe" which leads to the Porta Romana, one of the city's three gates.
During the tour your guide will give you full history of the theatre of ancient ostia built during the period of the Emperor Augustus. At the end of the IInd century, the Emperor Commodo re-built the theater to hold from 3000 to 4000 people.
Here you will discover also the principle public buildings, "Il Capitolium" and the temple of Rome and Augustus, the Basilica and the large thermal baths. Near the forum square you will also find the House of Diana and the "Thermopolium" an ancient Roman bar while on the Horrea Epagathiana way it is possible to see the Domus of Love and Psiche and the Ercole's Temple where a unique mosaic was found rapresenting fishermans pulling up the statue of Erculus from the abyss with a fishing net.
